LA COURSE AUTOUR DE LA GRANDE TORTUE allows those who do not have the means to make use of this new democratic right, to have a voice and to exercise that right. It must also be said that in today's world, generally speaking, the majority of recognized specialists in education agree that media education is one of the top priorities in the field. Many educational systems, notably in Quebec, also recognize that media and information technology -- mass media (print media, television, cinema, and advertising, for example), as well as recent electronic media (internet, CD-rom, etc.)--have a phenomenal impact on society. This new reality calls for the acquisition of specific knowledge and competencies appropriate to the development of a critical spirit in our youth today. By virtue of the training component which precedes the practical and reflection components, LA COURSE AUTOUR DE LA GRANDE TORTUE will equip these young people with the intellectual tools that will allow them to develop hands-on skills and practical strategies enabling them to assess and analyze today's mass of accessible information, thereby developing critical judgement in the face of their own contexts. By giving youth the opportunity to create their first films, this adventure quickly projects them into situations that will require them to make immediate connections between theory and practice. As another incentive, these young filmmakers will have the distinct opportunity of orking alongside other First Nation young people during the training and editing stages, in a unique environment chosen to spark healthy competition among the participants. We have also approached the NGO, ALTERNATIVES to support and follow
the project as a communication tool, in its magazine, ALTERNATIVES,
which is released monthly in Le Devoir. ALTERNATIVES is organizing an international youth gathering at the end of August. We are discussing the possibility of inviting our young participants to this gathering so they can present their project to other youth from around the world. This event will be held not far from Montreal.
